Shell Voluta C is a premier quality blended quench oil developed for the heat treatment of most carbon alloy steels. It is a medium to low viscosity blend of solvent refined oils having excellent thermal and oxidation stability with good water shedding properties. In addition it has a high flash point, low volatility and high resistance to saponification when used in conjunction with salt baths

Thermal Stability
Mineral oils are subject to two forms of degradation at elevated temperatures:

  1. Cracking or the breaking down of hydrocarbon molecules by heat. Large molecules rupture into smaller molecules and so on. Some appear as volatile gases, while others are unstable and polymerise into non-soluble deposits.
  2. Oxidation or the reaction of hydrocarbon oil with atmospheric oxygen. At room temperature this reaction occurs very slowly, but it accelerates rapidly with increasing temperature. Oxidation produces acidity in the oil, some non-soluble contaminants and is usually accompanied by an increase in viscosity.

Shell Thermia Plus has exceptionally good thermal stability at bulk oil temperatures up to 280°C.

The rates of cracking and oxidation are very small, giving maximum oil life. This assumes an efficient fluid heater with good pump circulation so that film temperatures on the heater surfaces do not exceed 310°C.

Oxidation produces acidity in the oil, some non-soluble contaminants and is usually accompanied by an increase in viscosity.

Shell Thermia Plus has exceptionally good thermal stability at bulk oil temperatures up to 280°C.

The rates of cracking and oxidation are very small, giving maximum oil life. This assumes an efficient fluid heater with good pump circulation so that film temperatures on the heater surfaces do not exceed 310°C.

    Shell Clavus is designed for the lubrication of compressors with ammonia (R717) as refrigerant. It can also be used when hydrocarbon (e.g. R600a) are the refrigerant. It may be used with halogenated hydrocarbon (R12,R22) if Shell Clavus G is not available.
